Save the Date Wording: Examples for Every Style

A save the date is the friendly heads-up that comes before your formal wedding invitation. It gives guests time to book travel and mark their calendars — especially important for destination weddings and long weekends. The wording is short and sweet; here is exactly what to include, plus examples for every style.

When you are ready, you can make one with a free wedding invitation template and share it digitally in minutes.

What to Include on a Save the Date

Unlike a full invitation, a save the date only needs the essentials:

  1. The couple's names.
  2. The wedding date (an exact date, or "Summer 2026" if it is not finalized).
  3. The location — at least the city and state.
  4. A note that a formal invitation will follow.

You do not need the venue address, ceremony time, or RSVP details yet — those come with the invitation.

Photo Save the Date Wording

If you are adding an engagement photo, keep the text minimal so it does not compete with the image:

  • "Save the Date · Emily & Michael · 06.12.2026"
  • "The wait is over — June 12, 2026"
  • "Save our date · Napa Valley · Summer 2026"

When to Send Save the Dates

  • Local weddings: 4–6 months before the wedding.
  • Destination weddings or holiday weekends: 8–12 months before, so guests can plan travel and time off.

Send your formal invitation about 6–8 weeks before the wedding, after the save the date.
